Battle for Blues

Birmingham City are expecting a ‘physical’ and ‘mental’ battle tomorrow when Chris Hughton’s team face promotion chasing Cradiff City.

Blues trail third placed Cardiff by 8 points, but they have 3 games in hand due to their Europa League exploits.

Cardiff are in great form and Chris Hughton is impressed with the job Malky Mackay has done with the Bluebirds who are unbeaten in nine games.

“Cardiff are in very good form and in confident mood having gone through to the semi-finals of the Carling Cup,” said Hughton.

“At the moment they are not doing too much wrong. I’m quite sure if I was in the other changing room in confident mood then I would be wanting to build on that.

“I think whichever camp you are in, you’ve got to approach the game in the way you feel is most favourable for you.

“It will be a test for us mentally and physically.

“They’ve got a very good manager in Malky Mackay, who has moulded them into a hard-working unit.”

Chris Hughton believes that Cardiff’s good form is down to the clubs team ethic, but has also pointed out the qualities of striker Kenny Miller and midfielder Peter Whittingham.

“I think their team organisation is excellent, they are very strong in midfield,” added the Blues boss.

“Cardiff have a real good team ethic, are well-organised, and get a lot of bodies around the ball.

“They’ve got a good front player in Kenny Miller who makes great runs.

“In Peter Whittingham they have a player, who for me, is a Premier League player, not only for his ability, but the fact that he can score goals.”
