The Night St Andrew’s Rocked

I can hardly believe it has been over twelve years since Birmingham City beat tomorrow’s opponents Ipswich Town 4-1 (4-2 on aggregate) at St Andrew’s to secure a place in the 2001 Worthington Cup Final against Liverpool.

A packed and rocking St Andrew’s saw Blues reach their first major cup final in 38 years.

The line up on that evening was: Bennett, Gill, Grainger, Purse, Johnson.M, Eaden (Hughes 109), Lazaridis (Burrows 118), O’Connor, Sonner, Horsfield, Adebola (Johnson.A 97).
Subs Not Used: Poole, Ndlovu.

Goals: Geoff Horsfield (2) Martin Grainger and Andrew Johnson

Blues were beaten 5-4 on penalties in the final after the contest finished in a 1-1 stalemate.

Nevertheless, re-live that memorable Thursday evening at St Andrew’s, when Trevor Francis’s team did themselves and Blues fans everywhere proud.
